Best Chicago Vendors???

I may be headed to Chicago in a couple of months and was wondering which are the best vendors? In the near future I'm looking to buy a long fringe belt, a bell sleeve tie top, and maybe a tribal choli. If there's somewhere I can see, touch, try on, that would be great!

Thanks much.

I'm getting excited for the Saqra workshop that Della is hosting in September!!! If you haven't heard about it, follow this link:

http://www.delladancing.com/saqra.html

I am especially excited because the workshop topics are all things that I believe are fundamentals, but that it seems hard to find classes about them. This is definitely a great opportunity!!!

So... are you going?

Ah, jazz dance. This was Sahira's first love, and fortunately, it fuses very well with bellydance. In this workshop students learn some basic jazz technique including large isolations and torso accents, spins, and new ways to travel across the floor. Jazz is very energetic, so you'll get a great workout along with new ways to spice up your bellydance! This workshop is for students with some dance experience.
1:00 - 3:00 pm
This technique workshop focuses on small isolations, shimmy layering, and popping/locking. It's all about your muscles! We begin with a muscle-intensive warmup, where Sahira highlights which muscles should be working for which moves. Then you'll learn a variety of sharp isolations throughout the torso, culminating in a short tribal fusion choreography. This workshop is taught at the intermediate/advanced level.

Both Workshops cost $50 ($60 day of)

Building a music community? (x-post)

Tribal Revolution has just wrapped up and we had melody classes (taught by the lovely Melissa Murphey of Ishtar) for the first time. They were a hit! We also had a TON of live music with Carmine Guida, August Herr from Mezmer Society, and Gaiananda. It was a total blast and it got me thinking.....

How many of you or folks you know who play an instrument would be interested in a couple of music-focused events in the Chicago area? All would be welcome to bring whatever instrument you play, Middle-Eastern or not and learn songs and ensemble skills. There'd be classes in drumming at different levels and melody making from playing basic tunes to playing a taqsim. In the evening we'd have a "jaslah," which is Melissa's term for a more music focused hafla.... a real jam session with open dancing but no dance performing.

I'm thinking I might do this a few times a year to create a musical series and build a Midwestern music community to go along with our booming dance community. All of the above named entities are interested in making this happen, but I can't bring them all here if nobody's coming to the workshops and jaslah!

How 'bout it Chi-town and beyond? Interested?

"Raqs Nebraska" tribe replaces NBDS tribe

My “Nebraska Bellydance Spectacular” tribe was just kind of hanging out collecting dust, (as the event happens only once a year) so I thought I’d change it up to be a little more useful.

That tribe is now “Raqs Nebraska”. My intent is for it to be a place for people to find classes, shows, workshops, etc. here in our state, which has a beautifully-emerging, diverse bellydance community!

Hope you enjoy it! Here’s the link http://tribes.tribe.net/raqsnebraska

If you were a member of the NBDS tribe, you are already included in this revamped tribe.

2 - 4 p.m. - Troupe Synchronicity
Learn some tricks to make different body types, different strength levels, long legs, short legs, long or short torsos ALL look enough alike to paint a total picture. You will to take home some exercises to help make you more aware of the differences and to help get you in sync with your dance partners!

8 p.m. - Ms. Zuza's Belly Bonanza featuring Urban Gypsy and regional dance talent

10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. - Sharp and Funky Movements with Sahira
Using funky pops, locks & intense isolations to create a modern urban flair in your dance. Usable on the stage or in your favorite club.

2 - 4 p.m. - The Joy of Poi: Fireless Fire Spinning*
Basic poi technique and transitions for the belly dancer. No fire will be used in class.

* Practice poi can be purchased at many online stores, including www.homeofpoi.com/. Or, make your own using 2 tennis balls and a pair of strong stockings (the thick, opaque kind) or tube socks.

About Valizan:
Valizan began his journey into Middle Eastern dance in 1995 when he joined The Society For Creative Anachronism, an educational group that learns about the Middle Ages by recreating it. Teachers Rayah Blackstar and Moria The Black instilled basic technique, while classes with the sublime Roula Said took him to a new plateau. Current influences include Yasmina Ramzy, Fat Chance Belly Dance, Jillina, Rachel Brice, Francisco Carranza and Aziz of Salt Lake City.

As one of few male belly dancers in North America, he has become a sought after solo performer and teacher across Canada and The U.S. for his powerful style and energy. He also heads up his own troupe, Shades Of Araby. Local appearances include Arabesque Dance Company's Asala, The International Belly Dance Conference Of Canada, Tribally Inspired, Northern Migration, The Dark Side, Face Zenna at the Royal Ontario Museum and The Bewitching Bellydance Ball. He also headlined In The Heat Of The Hafla in Milwaukee and appeared at Cabin Fever in Buffalo, NY.

He was recently honored to have been included in the 2007 Men Of Middle Eastern Dance Calendar put out by male belly dancer Jim Boz.

He began teaching American Tribal Style belly dance at Arabesque Academy in 2004, and became an apprentice in the Arabesque Dance Company in November 2005 when he began training in Egyptian Folklore with Yasmina Ramzy. He is honored to be a lead dancer in the Arabesque Dance Company Men's corps, and in the new project, The Righteous Rogues Of Raks.

Valizan also holds a degree from The Ryerson School Of Journalism.
Deniz’s Original Annual Charity event is BACK!
10th Annual Belly Boo Bash will be on Saturday, October 4th, 2008 in the Historic Oregon District.
Come one, come all for a great cause. Tickets are only $15, and all proceeds go to the charity. This year’s charity is the Lakota Indian Nation. Many are living in sub-standard housing, with no heat, running water or electricity. Many children don’t have a winter coat. The sad thing is that this is going on right here in America. So let’s do something to help out and come in your most ghoulish gear and be prepared to scare.
If you are interested in dancing in the event, please call Deniz at 937-602-3788. Spots are limited so call her quick! In addition to the workshop earlier that day, Valizan will be performing that night. The event will be held at the new PlayThink Learning location at 411 E Fifth Street in the middle of the Historic Oregon Distric. There will be plenty of parking now that the city of Dayton is sending 1.3 mil to create more places for people to park. Show starts at 8:pm and will be done when we’ve squeezed all the fun we can out of the night. Open dancing, yummy treats, raffle items, plus anything else we can think up to make the night an exceptional evening to remember.
Visit www.caravanworkshops.com to learn more.

10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. - Sharp and Funky Movements with Sahira
Using funky pops, locks & intense isolations to create a modern urban flair in your dance. Usable on the stage or in your favorite club.

2 - 4 p.m. - The Joy of Poi: Fireless Fire Spinning
Basic poi technique and transitions for the belly dancer. No fire will be used in class.

Sun June 8: Delsarte for Dancers returns to Louisville!

Samovar Dance LLC presents:

Joe Williams RETURNS to teach the Delsarte System of Expression for Dancers!

Sun, June 8, 1:30 - 4:30 pm $35.00
Samovar Dance Studio at 300 Distillery Commons
Louisville 40206 (next to Headliners on Lexington Rd)

(Yes! We bring him back because we want to take a workshop from him again!)

What do Morocco of NYC (noted authority on Middle Eastern dance) and the Juillard School in NYC have in common? Both have Joe Williams on their faculty teaching the Delsarte system!

Delsarte gesture & movement principles add emotional depth to your technique & improvisation...improve communication with your audience...and identify movement patterns that are limiting the expressive use of your body. And Joe Williams is THE acknowledged expert on Delsarte!

This workshop will (re)introduce the basics of body language as revealed by Delsarte, describe straightforward but little-known techniques for communicating with your audience, and teach Delsarte exercises that establish the qualities of Beauty, Power and Presence in any dancer. This is a not-to-be-missed opportunity for Kentuckiana dancers of all disciplines and skill levels to come to grips with the challenge of dancing what they feel and feeling what they dance. If you are a dancer or a choreographer at any skill level you need to be here!

Joe got rave reviews from the attendees at the April workshop. This longer workshop will present new material as well as a refresher on the original stuff. It is hard to believe how informative this workshop is until you take it... and Joe has devised a structure which is lucidity itself. He doesn't leave students lost, bewildered or confused. There were dozens of a-ha! moments each hour. He truly is amazing.

$35 tuition includes admission to the Shake Your Tail Feathers party that will be held after the event. Joe will be vending a supplementary Practice Guide to students who wish to purchase one.

For directions, details, or to pay by PayPal:
www.Ruric-Amari.com (502) 777-7317

=========================================================================

"Joe Williams has single-handedly brought the wonderful principles and authentic teachings of real Delsarte back to life and to us. It's a necessary addition that improves any performing Art and Joe's clear, loving and gentle explanations make it so much easier for any student to grasp and employ for their betterment. He is simply inspiring." -- Morocco

Joe Williams has been successfully reviving interest in the Delsarte acting method with his workshops and seminars since 1997. Joe says: The Three Pillars approach teaches how body, mind, and spirit are not abstract principles but show themselves in every part of your body and every movement you make. Whether your style is Tribal, Fusion, Cabaret or Folkloric, you will see that all dance steps and gestures are various words from the alphabet of those three principals. Delsarte's principles of gesture are a powerful tool for developing body awareness for any number of ends.

The Delsarte method is the historically acknowledged source of the inspirations of Isadora Duncan, Ruth St. Dennis, and the entire Dennishawn School (including students Martha Graham and Doris Humphrey). Delsarte's work was praised by some of the greatest minds of the day, from scientists to religious scholars, musicians, and artists. Even renowned yogis mentioned it with the greatest respect. His system is a thorough examination of voice, breath, movement dynamics, line and form in their roles as expressive agents. Contemporary thought might recognize that he had uncovered the world of archetypes and universal symbolism. Unfortunately, the Delsarte system's popularity was its undoing in America. Within the span of twenty years it became a fad and then a frenzy, degenerated into a culture of studied posing, fell into disrepute, and disappeared... ...until Joe Williams decided to revive Delsarte's original system, that is. In the field of Delsarte for Middle Eastern Dance, he is now on the faculty of Morocco and the Casbah Dance Experience and has taught seminars and performed for BellyJam, Stars of the East, and Shakira in Columbus, Ohio. In 2005 he became a member of the faculty of the Dalcroze Institute at the Juilliard School in New York City, marking the first time in recent history that Delsarte has been taught as a valid and practical training method at a major school of fine arts.

Joe Williams, a resident of NYC, has been creating workshops and seminars on Delsarte since 1997. He is on the movement faculty for the Dalcroze Institute at Juilliard, and has been a guest teacher and Artist in Residence for Lori Belilove's Isadora Duncan Dance Foundation in New York. Williams has taught Master Classes for the Dance Department at Iowa State University, Wright State University, Ocean County Performing Arts Academy in NJ, Corporeal arts Inc. and at the Omaha Healing Arts Center. He has taken Delsarte to the Star Island Retreat Center for a week of dance, and used Delsarte to teach body language as a guest lecturer for communication classes at Mercy College, Bronx Community College and the School for Visual Art in Manhattan. An article in Mime Journal's 2005 special edition on Delsarte has brought him international recognition for his work in Delsarte and he has been consultant and teacher for the first scholarly thesis on the subject to be written in France, Francois Delsarte's homeland.

In the field of Middle Eastern Dance (MED) , he is on the faculty of Morocco and the Casbah Dance Experience, and has taught seminars and performed for Bellyjam, Stars of the East, Shakira in Columbus, Ohio, and special appearances with Su'ad and Farasha, in Connecticut, Vermont and New Jersey. Joe's work with Delsarte has been featured in articles in the MED publications WAMEDA (July-August 2000) and Zaghareet! (Sept - Oct 2000). His involvement in MED began in 1985 when Joe joined the Dayton Ethnic Dance Ensemble, which studied historically accurate Middle Eastern dance. In 1986 he began to work on the dance of the Whirling Dervish, which he has been performing consistently since 1994, most notably for the Institute of Ethnicity, Culture and the Modern Experience at Rutgers Universtity and the New School University Diversity Initiative in New York.

A teacher of dance, voice and yoga, Joe has a BA in organizational and interpersonal communications and a minor in theater from Wright State University, where he was the artistic director for the "Rolling Stock" theater group, helping to write and produce touring shows that presented the talents of differently-abled students. He was a scholarship student in ballet at the Dayton Ballet and Dayton Contemporary Dance schools (becoming assistant business manager of the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company for one year), and taught communication workshops for the Wright State School of Medicine for 6 years. His performing credentials include dinner theaters in the Midwest, where he danced and sang his way in numerous musicals including "George M", "Fiddler on the Roof," "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers," "Phantom," "Annie,"and several holiday reviews. He has also appeared as vocal soloist in oratorios with regional orchestras and with the Upper West Side Opera Association in Manhattan.

Its a work in progress. I'm working on the first BBBD Meet-Up that will hopefully happen next year. I'm a little skinny (skinny lol) on details as of yet as to where it will be but it will happen. This is open for discussion as to what people would like to have in this meet. We will have workshops with some of our big beautiful bellydancer, performances, vending( is very possible still working on that) and a last night banquet send off with free dance.
If you have any request I would love to hear them and i will see what i can do.
Is this something we are ready for? Who would love to join us in a few days of fun and sisterhood. (Male big beautiful bellydancers and supporters welcome too.)
P.S. If your willing to teach a workshop let me know. I'm trying to get diffrent workshops togeather in my book.
Thank you,
J.

Ignorance at local radio station....bashing belly dancers

Yesterday, our local paper did a very nice article about the dance studio that my teacher/troupemate opened last fall:

www.journalgazette.net/apps/p...article

Please note the pic at the top corner - this pic was what was front on the living section. Now I didn't hear it, because I like to listen to music in the morning, but apparently, one of our local radio stations was bashing said teacher/troupemate on their morning show. Their message was that "fat" girls shouldn't be bellydancing. They even had two girls call in and say that they are fat and therefore, would never attempt bellydancing, so if you aren't stick-thin, then you shouldn't be a dancer. Nice.

Since, we all know that bellydance is for beautiful women of all shapes and sizes, I would like to ask that as many dancers as possible email them at: tnt@989thebear.com and let them know what ignorant assholes they are. Feel free to be as foul and hostile as you would like to be.

We want something that is accessible to everyone so we can share what we're doing with friends, family, and the public in general!

Just wanted to say thanks to Samantha Fairuz, Denise, the ladies of the Safar Dance Company, and Denise's dance company (the name of which is escaping me just this moment--I am so sorry!) for a wonderful weekend in Milwaukee. I and several of the ladies from Al-Bahira Dance Theater made the trip from Minneapolis for the Sahra Saeeda workshop, and we had a GREAT time! Sahra was fantastic, and the hospitatlity of the local ladies was wonderful at the show, the workshop, and on Friday night at the Casablanca.

I was also happy to have the opportunity to finally meet in person some of the people I've met on Tribe and Bhuz such as Christina of Blue Lotus (who was SMOKIN' HOT in her sexy red costume and orientale solo!) and Leize and the Rakshanda gals. Zahra Saghira even joined us for dinner and a giggle-filled coffee-seeking expedition in the Al-Bahira van between the workshops and the show on Saturday. ;-)

So thanks again, ladies, for an enjoyable weekend. Hope to see you again soon!

X-POST: Early Urban Gypsy Registration Deadline - May 15!

Just a reminder to everyone that the deadline to get all four Urban Gypsy workshops for $100 is fast approaching! Registration forms should be postmarked May 15 or sooner.

Below is the workshop list. For registration form, visit www.mszuza.info/UGregistration.htm

Hope to see you soon!

Saturday, July 26

10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. - Gahwazee Influenced Improv
Take the dance back to its roots! Inspired by the folk dances of Upper Egypt, Urban Gypsy brings you a "brand new" (but really old!) vocabulary of sassy and earthy movement combinations from their time spent with the Gahwazee and folk dancers in Cairo last year. Hearken back to the days of dancing in the desert with Urban Gypsy. Don't forget your zills!

2 - 4 p.m. - Troupe Synchronicity
Learn some tricks to make different body types, different strength levels, long legs, short legs, long or short torsos ALL look enough alike to paint a total picture. You will to take home some exercises to help make you more aware of the differences and to help get you in sync with your dance partners!

Sunday, July 27

But seriously, we've attained almost full status in the first 3 workshops that Sharon & Kami are putting on, but only about half-full on the Advanced Tribal workshop Sunday afternoon.

I hope the description has not scared anyone off. No one will be humiliated or made to cry, we promise! :) Consider that even if you haven't had a lot of Tribal training, you will have had 3 classes with the ladies by the time the advanced class starts. I'M even taking the class, and I'm just an average dancer, so don't be afraid! Sign up and be challenged!! :]

In this class we will not only work on honing our dance technique, we will put it to good use as we put those moves we have drilled ever so faithfully! We will learn and create some fun combinations that can be incorporated into your own repertoire, keeping strong muscular skill and alignment well in hand so the creative juices are free to flow! As we weave our moves into combos, we shall then weave the combos into a choreography to take with us!
This class will begin with posture and technique drills, focusing on executing movements correctly and gaining muscle memory which is crucial in layering. We will continue by layering these movements on top of each other and eventually working towards layering 3 movements at a time. These moves will then be put into combinations and a short choreography will be introduced. All levels are welcome, beginning and advanced variations will be offered.

SHARON, SUN 2 - 5

Here we will cover more advanced topics such as precise multi-layered movement, footwork, turning technique, floor work and preperation for backbends. Beginning and ending with a Yoga warm up and cool down, we will stretch and prepare the body, and each student will be encouraged and assisted in creating their own strengthening and conditioning routine to take home and practice each day, in order to help them meet their personal goals as a dancer. Bring a mat, a notebook and pen.

Hi there!

MidNight Tribe is Growing!

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING VERY CAREFULLY. If you do not meet the following requirements, please reconsider auditioning.

Requirements:

• Dancer should have an intermediate/advanced education in Egyptian/Cabaret style belly dancing. Folkloric dancing is a plus but not necessary. Competent use of zills will be necessary.

• Dancer should have an advanced Tribal/Tribal fusion education. We are not an ATS troupe, but use most movements from the slow/fast ATS vocabulary, as well as many currently popular tribal fusion movements.

• Dancer should be healthy, physically fit, and will be required to be able to make quick level changes, endure extended periods of dancing on the knees, and some floorwork.

• Dancer will be REQUIRED to perform with some sort of fire implement (fans, staff, poi and/or hoop). It is not necessary to already know how to dance with fire, we can and will train you. Dancer will be required to sign a waiver of liability, so you should have medical insurance.

• Dancer should have reliable transportation and optimally live on the Northwest side of Chicago and/or surrounding suburbs. Rehearsals are held in the Palatine area 1 to 2 times per week (Thursday nights and some Sundays), barring any severely inclement weather.

• Dancer is expected to show a high level of professionalism, troupe commitment and a commitment to further their own dance education.

• Dancer is expected to purchase their own troupe-related costume pieces, sew portions of their own costumes and help out regarding costume acquisition and assembly where and when necessary.

• Dancer will be required to sign a troupe charter.

If you said “yes” to all of the requirements and would like to audition, please email us privately at info@midnighttribe.com with a resumé/CV of your dance background, education and performances. Please include a cover letter telling us a little about yourself and what you'd expect from joining our troupe. If after reviewing your information we think you may be a good fit, we will email you with detailed information about the audition process, date, time and location.

Thanks!

hey hey everyone,

just wanted to take a moment to say mel and myself are really looking forward to coming to St. Louis in June. we've been making a list of fun fun combinations to teach you all and much much more!! we will have a huge time!!
so, let's see, a few fun facts about mel and teresa... 1. we both started taking belly dance around the same time from our teacher, Suzanne Armetta who we both loved very much. Suzanne taught both cabaret and folkloric styles of belly dance. 2. Rakadu was formed around 97-98 as a tribal style belly dance company. 3. Both Mel and I have earned the right to call ourselves "cat ladies", not because we live in Lexington, home of UK Wildcats, but because between the 2 of us we have an unmentionable # of cats who allow us to live with them. 4. Rakadu's roadtrip food of choice are "Cheesy Poofs" washed down with a little Rockstar beverage. 5. we love Arrested Development!!

what else, mel?

Hi Everyone,
I didn't want to send out another blanket event listing, so I'm only hitting the tribes that are the most likely to have folks interested in going. There is an important change - Saturday's workshop start time is a little bit later and the location has changed to the Co-Rec South Gym.

Thanks,
Jennifer Rose

About Urban Gypsy
Urban Gypsy has its roots in Houston, Texas ~ where they have nurtured tribal dance and fashioned a path for other tribal troupes to emerge and grow. The troupe consists of six incredibly talented and dedicated dancers, passionate about bringing to life the beauty and grace of our dance.

Zymirrah & Sahira also sponsor the 3rd Coast Tribal Dance Festival annually in in Texas. They are devoted to bringing talented performers to the 3rd Coast and sharing them with those eager to study our dance.

Zahra Zuhair Workshop in Madison, WI

On Saturday, April 12th, 2008, Bellydancing UW will host its 8th Annual Workshop and Spring Show. Due to an injury, Tamalyn Dallal will not join us for our events this year. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience this may cause and wish Ms. Dallal the best of luck with her recovery! If you have already registered for the workshop and would like a refund, you will receive an email from our show coordinator, Susan Ma, with instructions, detailing how to receive a refund.

On the bright side, we are delighted to announce that world-renowned performer, Zahra Zuhair, is coming to Madison to headline our dance workshop and show this year. Master teacher, performer, and choreographer, Zahra is world renowned for her knowledge, authenticity, and dedication to the art of Middle Eastern dance. Raised in oriental dance since a young girl, Zahra is known for her musicality, flawless technique, and elegant style. She has trained and influenced many of today’s oriental dance stars. Zahra has taught workshops and performed worldwide. She is the artistic director of the Ghazella Dance Company, and has written, directed and choreographed theatre productions intertwining Middle Eastern stories and dance under the name Po Na Na Dance Theatre. Zahra is co-owner of DanceGardenLA dance studio, and teaches regular classes in Los Angeles, California. For more information about our headliner, please visit her website, www.zahrazuhair.com.

For this event, Zahra will cover basic Tunisian dance technique, combinations, and a fun upbeat choreography to a modern arrangement of a popular Tunisian song. Tunisian dance has an interesting "twist" on bellydance movements and can be easily adapted to any dancer's repertoire. Early registration is open through April 1st!

Early warning: MEDSOK brings Karim Nagi to town Nov 1 & 2!

Karim Nagi, Mr. Turbo Tabla himself, is MEDSOK's 2008 workshop instructor. Karim Nagi's reputation as a master percussionist, dancer, teacher, performer and (as one U-Tube fan calls him ) 'party in a box' is growing fast. Karim has developed a comprehensive zill method that utilizes drum techniques and an ambidexterous approach and is a pioneer in the "Dancing Drummer" esthetic, combining choreographed movement with articulate drumming, done in unison. Laurel Victoria Gray (artistic director of Silk Road) updated her zill class technique in 2004 to reflect his system of developing ambidexterous skills . He teaches at Artemis's Folk Tour camp and he is a faculty member of the New England Conservatory of Music.

He says: 'I regularly teach the Traditional, Old Guard and Cabaret schools, and I am also consistently invited to the major Tribal festivals. I am a native Egyptian, but am well acclimated to the American teaching style (highly verbal, and systematic with clear breakdowns, and I supply notes). I also teach at the university level. As a performer I have created pure tradition as well as hybrid/fusion work. But don't let all the credential-stuff color your opinion. My classes are fun and funny. "

We haven't decided what dancing/music classes we'll ask him to do, but in case you want a preview:
